The Perfect Blackberry Lassi

Last week I asked my followers what should I make with all of the blackberries growing in my backyard. Should I make something sweet? Salty? A smoothie perhaps? Alas, the votes were quite mixed… so I decided to combine the best of all worlds with a drink I haven’t had since I was in India several years ago – I’m talking about lassi!

Lassi is a traditional Indian beverage made with yogurt, milk, fruit, and an assortment of spices. You’ll find this in most Indian restaurants, with mango lassi or salted lassi being the most common flavors. I’m going with blackberry today because they look so good soaking up the sun in my backyard!

Ingredients & Gear for this Blackberry Lassi Recipe

Lassi can made a number of ways, here’s what I recommend you’ll need to make this recipe:

Blackberries

I’m choosing blackberries because they’re seasonal. Feel free to swap this fruit for mango, strawberries, or just enjoy your lassi plain. I’ve included different flavor combination ideas down below.

Yogurt, or Milk Kefir

While yogurt is typical, I happen to have some milk kefir left over from a client shoot, so I’ll be using milk kefir instead. Feel free to swap dairy yogurt for non dairy yogurt (coconut yogurt sounds delish) or milk kefir.

Milk

Dairy or non dairy will work great.

Sugar

Can be swapped for honey, agave, maple syrup, etc. This can be added to suit your preferences or possibly omitted altogether if your fruit is sweet enough!

Salt

Optional. Some lassi is salted, some isn’t, it’s up to you!

Cardamom

Just one of many possible spice additions. I love cardamom, but cinnamon and/or cumin would work great too.

Blender

Here is one I recommend. A food processor will also work.

Strainer

To strain out the blackberry seeds.

Favorite Lassi Flavor Combinations

If blackberries aren’t your thing, or if you have other fruit seasonally available to you, never fear! Here are some of my favorite lassi flavor combinations:
